Javier Mascherano believes that only his compatriot Lionel Messi is bigger than Barcelona.

In football, there is a saying that has been the precedent of the sport. No one player is bigger than the club he plays for. This is true for 99.9% of players that play competitive football. Very few players are talented enough to be bigger than the club. According to one Barcelona player, one teammate of his believes that he is bigger than Barca. Javier Mascherano believes that Lionel Messi, his teammate for club and country, is bigger than the club they’ve known for years.

At one point, Messi was ordinary like many other players. Because of his work ethic and talent, Messi has become arguably the best player to ever play the sport. In addition to his goal-scoring ability, his play-making for others is next to none. Javier Mascherano has been fortunate enough to be with Messi for most of his journey through Barca or through the Argentine National Team. Mascherano, the Argentine defender/midfielder, explained why Messi is bigger than the club to the Barca club magazine.

“He is indispensable,” Mascherano said of Messi. “Leo is a unique player. We are talking about the best player in history, in this sport and of this club. There have been very important players in the last few years at Barcelona. Players who will stay in the history of the club. I think it’s a big error to think that when you leave the club, the club will suffer. No, the club is bigger than any player, any other player, except for Leo. That’s the reality and you have to accept it.”
