Goalkeeper

GK Marc Andre Ter Stegen – 6

Despite Isco’s many tricks and turns around the box, Ter Stegen wasn’t tested too often, but did make a good reaction save on a close-range effort from Gareth Bale just shy of 40 minutes in. Could do nothing to stop the own goal and was thrilled to see Ronaldo’s bicycle attempt shanked. Delivered a strong wrist to keep out a drive from Marcelo and keep it at 1-1 but no goalkeeper is stopping that worldie from Ronaldo—though a better goalie might have stopped Asensio’s.

Defenders

RB Aleix Vidal – 7.5

Struggled early on as he tried to carry the ball from the back but often turned it over instead. Found space after a Luis Suarez flick and held on too long when Suarez had space six yards from goal. Found his feet as the game went on and nearly set up Messi for an equalizer after a great run into the box. It ended up being a good showing as he fights to hold down the right back spot.

CB Gerard Pique – 4

In a rivalry match, a yellow for a deliberate handball in attack is not what you want from your team’s most important defender. One moment of madness from the 28th minute on and Barca were in trouble. That moment didn’t come in the form of a red card, but rather an unfortunate own goal, one Sergio Ramos will probably Tweet about later. Got roasted by Benzema but Alba bailed him out with goal line block. How did he not think Ronaldo would cut on his right for Madrid’s second?

CB Samuel Umtiti – 7.5

Pressured on the ball but handled himself in a cool manner most of the time. While Pique wasn’t his best, Umtiti shone most out of the two center backs, showing plenty of composure throughout. The contact he made with Ronaldo was standard shoulder-to-shoulder stuff, but he’s lucky the referee saw it that way too.

LB Jordi Alba – 7

Did well in the first half as I’m still not sure Gareth Bale was even on the pitch, that’s how tight Alba stuck to the Welshman. Offered his side a lifeline when he flung his body across the ground to thwart a Carvajal effort on what appeared to be an open goal, keeping it at 1-0. Other than that, he didn’t do too much wrong or right.
