Official: Ernesto Valverde to pen new deal at Barcelona

Barcelona have decided to award Ernesto Valverde a new deal

Although Barcelona are going for the treble this season, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu that the results of this season are not going to determine the future of Ernesto Valverde. Earlier, the Basque coach said that his future depended on the club’s performance, but that is not the case.

Barça are giving Valverde a new contract. It will set in once his current deal expires at the end of the season. It would extend up to the end of next season, with the two parties having an option to extend it further for a season in consensus.

The signing of the contract will take place before the pre-match press conference in the build-up to the home game against Real Valladolid. For Bartomeu, this is a show of faith in the manager. But it might have been a little too early for that, with the season reaching an important point.

The run of fixtures over the course of the next month are going to determine Barça’s season. When the club was expected to secure its third treble in a decade at the beginning of the season, anything less would amount to an underwhelming season.

Perhaps Valverde will be motivated to do even better with his long-term future at the club secured. But if he is unable to turn out the recent run of inconsistent form, Barça are going to have a tough time winning all three major competitions, especially with lack of cover for Jordi Alba.

If the ex-Culé is not able to deliver, a sacking could be in order. But since the modern Barça prefer stability, that is highly unlikely. So, the club may be forced to continue with Valverde even if he does not manage to win the treble this season, which wouldn’t have been the case otherwise.
