The German international stole the show with two mind-blowing saves, denying Mario Hermoso and Alvaro Morata, which ultimately resulted in Barcelona winning with Lionel Messi’s brilliant 86th-minute winner.
Coach Valverde praised both the Goalkeepers stating that they are both capable of performing miracles on a regular basis. Teammates Luis Suarez and Sergio Roberto were also impressed by the German’s performance.
Ter Stegen himself, however, understated his outstanding performance by claiming he was just doing his job.
“I try to do my job. These matches make us grow as a team and that is what it is about. I am really happy because now we’ve played well for a few games while winning.” Sport
The Goalkeeper also spoke about the opponent’s performance and stated that the Wanda Metropolitano is always a difficult place to play.
“We knew it was a difficult place to come. It’s normal that they have chances. They have a lot of quality. But defensively we played really well and in the end we’ve scored the goal which has earned a really important win.” Ter Stegen continued.
The 27-year-old was delighted with the team’s victory,
“That’s what we hoped for before the game and what we prepared for all week. I am really happy with this win.”
The Barca man has been struggling to find minutes under Joachim Loew’s German national team where Manuel Neuer at 33 years of age is still the favorite. This performance, however, should surely impress the German coach enough to make the Barcelona’s No. 1, Germany’s undisputed starter.
