Lionel Messi gives green light to Barcelona for surprising January transfer

Lionel Messi has approved Barcelona’s approach for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar and would even be happy in seeing him join next month.

Barcelona need to refurbish their backline after lacklustre performances of late. The Catalans were on the verge of signing Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax Amsterdam during the summer, but the Dutchman preferred moving to Juventus instead and the Blaugrana will now pursue other options, most likely in 2020.

Gerard Pique’s recent performances have suggested that he is becoming old and obsolete, no longer being an indispensable member of the squad. Samuel Umtiti could leave the club any time now, after unfortunately seeing his Barca career flop after persistent injuries. Jean-Clair Todibo is not seen as a starter just yet, so Clement Lenglet requires a reliable partner.

Diario GOL has reported that Barcelona will try to sign Milan Skriniar in January itself and have received the green light from Lionel Messi to do so. The Inter defender has been magnificent for Antonio Conte’s side but it looks like he will be leaving the Nerazzurri soon amid interest from several European giants including Barca and arch rivals Real Madrid.

Since Inter Milan are interested in signing Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal from Barcelona, the Blaugrana will propose a trade involving players instead of a regular deal. Since Skriniar is valued at roughly 100 million euros, Barca may have to pay 60 to 70 million euros from their own pocket depending on who goes to Inter between their two midfielders.

The two sides will meet in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday in what will be their final fixture of the group phase, at the San Siro. With qualification already sealed, Barca would probably rotate their squad for a string of difficult fixtures coming up but Inter Milan will stick to their first-choice eleven with Borussia Dortmund still battling them for a berth.
