Andoni Zubizarreta had earmarked Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the successor to club icon Victor Valdes. That’s a lot coming from a player who was between the sticks for Barca for 8 years and won 11 trophies with the club. Zubizarreta was the sporting director of Barcelona when he made this comment, and his successor Robert Fernandez has trusted Zubi’s decision. Ter Stegen has played well for Barcelona in the Champions League in his first two seasons at the club, taking over as full-time ‘keeper after Claudio Bravo’s departure this year.

Ter Stegen has the trust of the management despite his lapses of judgement in some games. He has a contract running up to 2019. Robert might want to renew his contract and give him a pay rise just to ensure his loyalty to the club. Ter Stegen is crucial to Barcelona’s future and is indispensable.
