Leganes, playing in their first season in the top flight of Spanish football, have seen their ups and downs this season.

Leganes are playing in their first season in La Liga after 88 seasons hopping from the Segunda División to the Tercera División many times. They finished 2nd in Segunda B last season which led to the greatest achievement in the history of the club. Now, the Pipeneros (cucumber growers) are adjusting to life in the Primera División.

The club has seen a lot of difficult results this season. However, those results were expected as they are a newly promoted team. Despite the tough start, Leganes got some great results. 4 points out of 9 to start their season had their fans thinking positive. Their first La Liga victory ever came against Celta Vigo earlier in the season, 1-0.

With every win they achieve, its new history that is added to the club and that is great to see. In addition, every loss has their fans thinking about being sent back down. A lot of results are needed from them in the stretch run of the La Liga season. Leganes haven’t won a league match since November of last year (a 2-0 win over Osasuna). With 18 points, they sit just one spot and two points above the relegation line.

Despite still being above the relegation line, a trip to Barcelona to take on the Catalan giants will likely not help in their quest to stay in La Liga. However, after they play Barca, there are a lot of winnable matches on their schedule. They play Deportivo La Coruna, Valencia, and Granada after Barca. These three teams are also fighting to stay up, so the points will be valuable to the Pipeneros.

Usually, players are told by the manager not to look ahead on the schedule and focus on whats coming up soon. However, it’s hard for Leganes to not look ahead to April 5th. On that day, they’ll host Real Madrid. I’m sure the fans are looking forward to playing against the great talent that they have. When Barca won 5-1 at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, fans were just happy that they got to play the Catalans. When the time comes, they’ll look for a result against their fellow city occupants.

Overall, Leganes is a football club that once lived in the shadows of Madrid’s La Liga giants (Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid). Now, they are out of the shadows and into the top flight. However, today will be a tough task against Barcelona at Camp Nou. Messi, Suarez, and Neymar lookto bounce back after a tough defeat to PSG in the midweek. Leganes are an inspiring story and no matter what happens this season, it’ll be a successful one for them. Hopefully, they don’t get relegated, but it will be a tough task to stay up.
