Work rate is an enormous part of Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy at Liverpool. Less so at Barcelona, but whoever replaces Luis Enrique could very well implement a high-octane system. So, it’s bizarre to say, but Coutinho’s work rate isn’t all that spectacular despite his key role in Klopp’s Liverpool.

When he’s feeling in the mood, Coutinho can be all over the pitch, hunting down the ball in a devastating press. However—and it’s shown in his recent form—when he’s lacking confidence, he

rests on the periphery of games. Liverpool’s left back James Milner had to do ridiculous amounts of defensive work in recent fixtures against Burnley and Manchester City because of the lack of cover from Coutinho.

If he is to replace Iniesta in the midfield, that work must improve.

There is also his level of consistency to consider. Coutinho began the season in blistering form, playing at a level that, if carried throughout, would make him a lock for PFA Player of the Year. Instead, injuries and an inability to carry that form hurt both his stock and Liverpool’s early title charge.

The talent is there. If he can’t deliver more often than not though, is he cut out to play alongside the likes of Neymar, Suarez and Messi?
