It will be sad to see club icon Javier Mascherano leave, but he adds no value to the team other than his experience. Mascherano has been with the club for a long time. He has won 11 trophies with Barcelona and he was invaluable during his time at the Camp Nou.

But he has declined a lot this season. Mascherano has lost his place in the first-team to Samuel Umtiti and has not made good of his chances. Juventus had been linked with acquiring his services last summer but he stayed on. Although he would earn the club a nominal fee, his €6 million salary would be removed from the wage budget.

Barca can promote young Brazilian talent Marlon to replace him in the first-team squad. Marlon’s loan deal has to be made permanent before this occurs.
