FC Barcelona 5-0 Chapecoense: Recap and Analysis

In a great match for all of the fans at the Camp Nou, Barcelona win the Joan Gamper Trophy match over Chapecoense with a 5-0 scoreline.

For the local Barcelona fans, the Joan Gamper Trophy match is the first time that they get to see their team for a new season. It is a curtain raiser as the anticipation of seeing the best football being played begins. However, this Gamper match may have been the most special of them all due to the opponent that took the field against Barca. By now, everyone knows the tragic story of the Brazilian club Chapecoense.

The Brazilian club was going to play in the Copa Sudamericana final in Colombia. However, a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of 71 of the 77 passengers on board. This includes most of the members of the Chapecoense team. A touching moment happened during the match when Alan Ruschel, one of the players who survived the crash, got a standing ovation from the crowd. He played 35 minutes and was substituted for leading to the ovation.

In addition to that, he along with the other survivors, Neto and Jackson Follmann, got the biggest ovation of the night as they were introduced before the match. Unfortunately, the playing career has ended Follmann due to his leg being amputated because of the crash. Despite that crash, Neto is hoping to play again and surely the entire world is rooting for him.

As for the match, it had five goals scored by five different players. Gerard Deulofeu, Sergio Busquets, Lionel Messi,  Luis Suárez, and Denis Suárez all found the back of the net. Busquets’ goal stood out the most as he fired a rocket past Chapecoense goalkeeper Elias. Deulofeu also provided two assists along with his goal.

Overall, the 5-0 win will not be remembered by the team and the fans of both sides. Despite the fact that the season is beginning next week, this match wasn’t about preparing for the season. It was about honoring the loved ones who lost family members in that tragic plane crash. The match was about something that was bigger than the sport.

Less than a year ago, Chapecoense was at rock bottom. After many uplifting contributions from teams around the world, the team is going to get back to prominence again. The world is rooting for this Brazilian club to be successful as their league season is continuing in Brazil. Barca and Chapecoense prove that sports can provide relief for some of the biggest tragedies. Overall, the match was an emotional and great occasion that will help in the healing of the victims affected by this horrific tragedy.
