Paulinho, one of Barcelona’s new signings, says that he took a pay cut to join the Blaugrana from the Chinese Super League.

Brazilian midfielder Paulinho has been under fire since he joined Barcelona earlier in this transfer window. He signed from Guangzhou Evergrande for €40 million, but many weren’t happy with this move from the Blaugrana. Paulinho signing with Barca led to many fans calling for Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu to resign. Overall, the fans certainly disapprove of the move, but that isn’t stopping the Brazilian.

Paulinho wants to be a big part of a successful Barca season in 2017-18. He knows that we won’t be like much by the fans to start. However, if he turns in good performances he can start to win over the critics. The midfielder didn’t pan out with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, but Barca is giving him a second chance with a top club.

More from Everything Barca

Taking a pay cut is something that players do to help their teams sign other players. Paulinho is doing this with Barca. However, his €40 million transfer is still a record for a player leaving the Chinese Super League. He talked about what he had to do to join one of the best clubs in all of football. In addition to that, he just wants to have the success that Barca has seen over the last decade.

"“Yes. I’ve always been someone who put my career first and this was a chance which may not come up again, so I did everything I could to be able to play for Barca. At the end of the day, money’s never the most important thing. I have come here to fulfill a dream, to win titles and to be happy.”Paulinho on taking a pay cut"

In the end, fans hope that Paulinho isn’t the only answer in this window. Ousmane Dembele and/or Philippe Countinho are still on the wish list. The Barca board must start to get aggressive with their bids as the window is starting to close. We will see if the board can rise to the occasion as deadline day approaches.
