Playmakers –

Andrés Iniesta (first-choice) : The ‘old man’ of Barcelona is still skillful with the ball and is an important cog in the Barca machine. But he is not physically the same. Age has slowed him down and Ernesto Valverde needs to save his brilliance for the big games.

Ivan Rakitić (first-choice) : The Croatian workhorse forms a part of the feared midfield trinity. Rakitić’s ball distribution is second to none and despite giving it all in every match, Rakitić never tires. Valverde should leave him out only when he’s not at his best.

Sergi Roberto (second-choice) : Roberto is a similar type of player to Ivan Rakitić. He has shown his ability in the middle of park in the 2-0 win against Real Betis. He should be featuring regularly this season, both in the La Liga and the Champions League.

André Gomes (second-choice) : Despite enjoying a horrid first season at the Camp Nou, Gomes has the opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Ernesto Valverde should give the chances he deserves. But it will have to be limited to cup games.

Denis Suárez (second-choice) : The young Spaniard showed signs of brilliance last season. He is a potential successor to Iniesta. Valverde has already shown favour toward Denis, therefore, he he should be starting in a lot of games this season.

Rafinha Alcántara (third-choice) : The La Masia graduate is a supremely talented player, but injuries will limit his chances this season. Every manager has handed opportunities to Rafinha, but he has not delivered. But nonetheless, Valverde should consider him for a spot in the first-team in the Copa del Rey.

Arda Turan (third-choice) : Ernesto Valverde has already told Turan that he does not figure in his plans this season. Therefore, despite Turan’s eagerness to play, he is unlikely to get even a spot on the bench.
