German goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen continued his run of great form to begin the season for Barcelona in a 2-0 away victory against Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona have rebounded from the Spanish Super Cup debacle as they continue to control La Liga to begin the season. The Blaugrana picked up a 2-0 victory away from home against Athletic Bilbao over the weekend. This pushed their lead in the title race to four points over Valencia after 10 matches played. It is still early, but Barca have been taking care of business against teams like Athletic Bilbao so far this season.

In the first 10 league matches, Barca has scored 28 goals and conceded 3 while gaining 28 out of a possible 30 points. While this success is in large part due to the great play of Lionel Messi this season, there is an unsung hero that needs to be recognized. He had to prove to former manager Luis Enrique that he can be a number one goalkeeper. Now under Ernesto Valverde, Marc Andre Ter Stegen is playing an important role in some of the Blaugrana’s early success.

More from Everything Barca

The German goalkeeper arrived from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2014. He was looking to prove himself as he played in Barcelona’s cup matches during his first season. Ter Stegen ended up starting in the Copa Del Rey and Champions League final, both wins for the Blaugrana. After Claudio Bravo left for Manchester City, he was thrust into a bigger role for Barca.

Now, in his fourth season with the team, Ter Stegen has come through when the team needed him most. The Barca defense has been leaky at times and attacking players have gotten behind the back four a lot this season. However, the reason why Barca have only conceded four league goals is because Ter Stegen is making some great saves. When they surely were going to trail in the match at San Mames, Ter Stegen managed yet another clean sheet.

"“A large part of the win belongs to [Ter Stegen], he’s at a great level. He was key in making sure we won the game. We’re happy to have him with us and once again he was decisive in those big moments because the first [save] was at 0-0 and the second was at 1-0 in the final minutes, which would have led to a draw.”Sergio Busquets On Ter Stegen’s Performance against Athletic Bilbao"

Overall, Ter Stegen must continue this run of form as the schedule begins to get tougher for Barcelona. Four of Barca’s next 6 matches are going to be away from Camp Nou. It starts with a trip to Greece in Champions League action against Olympiacos. Look for Ter Stegen to be a key contributor once again.
