Barcelona’s unsung hero, Sergi Roberto is still waiting for the Catalan club to renew his contract, which is set to expire in June 2019.
The versatile player, who found his way to the first team from La Masia, is one of Barcelona’s prized possessions and a key aspect of the Catalan’s future, that is if they do renew his deal.
Although the Spaniard himself claimed there have been talks surrounding a new agreement, there is nothing to show for it. And to make matters worse, Roberto’s release clause is just £35million, a figure that heavyweight teams like Chelsea and Juventus can easily pay in exchange for the 25-year-old.
Since his amazing 2016/2017 campaign, the attacking midfielder has earned a convincing spot with the team. His performances have been nothing short than brilliant, shining in a position that he does not typically play in.

His heroic match in Barcelona’s 6-1 historical win against Paris Saint-Germain caught the attention of many elite clubs and with such a low release clause, the player could potentially be on his way out with several teams wanting his services.
This should indicate a red alarm for the Catalan club officials. If they hope to keep the player in Barcelona, they must quickly finalize a contract with Roberto.
However, Sergi, himself also has no desire to leave his childhood team and remains confident he will soon renew with the Blaugrana.
"“The negotiations are going well. I’ve been a Barca person since I was a kid so I think we should be able to reach an agreement without any problems.“There are always small things to discuss. That is what we are talking about in meetings, but I think everything is under control.”"
Since Ernesto Valverde’s arrival as head coach, Sergi Roberto has enjoyed several opportunities in his favored midfield position, continuing his brilliance on the field.
He has made a total of 17 appearances this season, scoring three goals and assisting one. After suffering a hamstring injury last month, keeping him out for a number of weeks, the footballer has returned and his star quality is only becoming better and better as time passes.
Roberto is known for breaking from the right-wing and driving the ball up to the front, creating goals and danger and if Barca want to keep one of their jewels, they need to get his signature on a new contract as soon as possible.
