Spanish defender Sergi Roberto has signed an extension with Barcelona until 2022 despite having really good offers from many other clubs.
Sergi Roberto has grown up from a Barcelona academy player to a member of the first team. He made his name as a midfielder, but his switch to right-back helped after legendary Brazilian Dani Alves decided to leave for PSG. He has been up and down over the last few seasons, but he made some great plays from the right flank that will always be remembered. For 12 years, he has represented the Blaugrana at every level and Thursday he was rewarded with a contract extension until 2022.
Every Barca fan remembers that famous goal against PSG in last years Champions League round of 16. It was a goal that completed one of the greatest comebacks in football history. From 4-0 down in the first leg to 6-5 on aggregate after the second leg, it is a memory that no one will forget.
That moment seemed to be the peak of him bursting onto the scene as a defender. In addition to that, he made an incredible solo run to begin a Barca attack that led to the 500th goal for Lionel Messi against Real Madrid to seal a victory.
Sergi Roberto was patiently waiting for his chance to break into the first team. He dealt with being out of the team many times, but he still continued to work hard waiting for his moment. In addition to that, he had some offers from other clubs that wanted his services. However, the young Spanish outside back stayed with Barca. Then, Pep Guardiola gave him his debut. Despite being a midfielder first, Luis Enrique gave him more minutes at a different position: right-back. In the end, he had achieved his goal.

The Spanish defender spoke about how much re-signing with Barca means to him. In addition, president Josep Maria Bartomeu talked about how patient Roberto was during the whole process from breaking into the first team to re-signing. He is an example that young players at the club should follow, according to the Barcelona president.
"“To the youngsters at the club I would say don’t stop fighting, that it’s not an easy path, that they focus on what they’re doing here and don’t look at offers. I would tell them to have patience, that their chance will arrive.”Sergi Roberto’s message to the Barca academy players"

Overall, Sergi Roberto re-signing is a good thing for the Blaugrana. Him and Nelson Semedo should share minutes at right-back from time to time. Sergi Roberto could also get minutes in the midfield, where he originally was going to play. In the end, it is a good day for the Spanish right-back and hopefully more good things are coming from him.
