Víctor Valdés, along with Andoni Zubizarreta, is considered as Barcelona’s best goalkeeper of all-time. He is a club legend, having graduated from La Masia and broke into the first-team. But Valdés is best known for having won the Zamora Trophy a record 5 times.

He won the Zamora Trophy in the 2004/05 season, and consecutively between 2008 and 2012. His ‘games-to-goals’ ratio was always very low, and he bettered his counterpart Iker Casillas of Real Madrid in all counts.

But following his departure, no one has been able to fill his void in the first-team. At first, Claudio Bravo showed some consistency in the league and won the Zamora Trophy in Barça’s treble-winning season.

But since then, it has exchanged hands between the rivals in Madrid, with Keylor Navas and Jan Oblak winning the prestigious award. But this season, Marc-André ter Stegen had a chance of asserting his dominance in the La Liga.

At the beginning of the season, the German shot-stopper produced brilliant performances and was touted as Manuel Neuer’s successor in the German national team. As the season progressed, he was said to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

But recently, his form has faltered, and the 26-year old has been inconsistent. Ter Stegen has made silly errors leading to goals, and has not been able to perfect his punching ability. It is starting to appear that he may be overlooked for the Zamora Trophy.

Ter Stegen can never fully succeed Valdés unless he wins the Zamora Trophy, which was the hallmark of the ex-Culé’s glorious career at the Camp Nou. But it seems that it may take another season for Ter Stegen to establish himself as an out-and-out Barça ‘keeper.
