SANTOS, BRAZIL – APRIL 24: Rodrygo

Rodrygo Goes is the latest sensation to capture the attention of European clubs, after Neymar and Vinicius Junior were snapped up by Barcelona and Real Madrid for large fees. This time, it is Barça targeting the player.

More from Everything Barca

Rodrygo has done very well for Santos, playing as a left winger. He has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season, and has scored 5 goals. He is a long-term prospect for Ernesto Valverde and the club has already made contact with his representatives over a potential transfer.

Rodrygo’s agent, and his father, Eric Batista de Goes, travelled to Barcelona to meet with club officials and begin negotiations over a move in the future. The objective of the negotiations is to reach an agreement that can bring the youngster to the Camp Nou when he turns 18.

But it will not be inexpensive to sign the 17-year old. He recently signed a new contract with Santos, keeping him at the club till 2022. Rodrygo has a release clause of €50 million, which is incredibly steep.

But he is expected to make his debut for the Brazil U-20 team, which will play in the FIFA U-20 World Cup next year in Poland. This will give Rodrygo much-needed experience on the international stage, and increase his market value considerably.

But even after he joins, the club needs to send him out on loan to a club playing in a European competition, where he can get some minutes. Unless the youngster turns out to be like Neymar, the club should follow this plan, like it did for Marlon Santos.
