Should Barcelona withdraw from the Supercopa de España?
Barcelona’s schedule does not suit the Supercopa de España
Every season, the Supercopa de España acts as a curtain-raiser for the La Liga. This season, domestic double winners Barcelona will take on Copa del Rey runners-up Sevilla in the two-legged match-up. Barça have won the title a record 12 times, while the defending champions are Real Madrid.
This competition is of minimal importance in context of the season. It is usually noncompetitive, and no club takes it seriously. The Supercopa de España also carries minimal prize money, thus, reducing its significance further.
It was scheduled by the Liga de Fútbol Profesional to be held on 5th and 12th August. Unfortunately, Barcelona have friendly with AC Milan just the day before the first leg, at the Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.
The club requested the LFP to reschedule the game, but La Liga president Javier Tebas has refused, citing the fact that it is a competition organised by the football association, while the other is just a friendly.
But it is a fact that the friendly will be more competitive than the Supercopa de España. Milan are a good club, and will put up more of a fight than Sevilla. And even though the Super Cup will result in more turnover for the club, the club should withdraw from the Supercopa de España.
Earlier, the game was expected to be postponed after LFP vice-president Andre Subies said that the match would be postponed if Sevilla gave their approval. But Javier Tebas has intervened, and decided against flexibility.

Although the move to withdraw from the competition will not be looked upon favourably by the LFP, the Supercopa de España is pointless and the association would do better to totally scrap it from their schedule, and encourage Spanish clubs to play in friendlies against foreign clubs.
