Barcelona : What’s next for Sergi Palencia?
The Barcelona B captain is out of favour at the Camp Nou
Sergi Palencia has one of Barça B’s top performers ever since he broke into the first-team at the Mini Estadi. He has been able leader for the team, and considering that the club needed a right-back at one point in time, he should have been promoted long ago.
But somehow, the management has always overlooked Sergi Palencia. The club’s latest signing also shows this. Palencia could have used the upcoming season to launch himself into mainstream football, and with Aleix Vidal’s imminent departure, he could have had an opportunity.

But Barcelona have signed 19-year old Senegalese right-back Moussa Wagué from Belgian Pro League club KAS Eupen. He did for his national team in the World Cup, scoring once in a 2-2 group stage draw against Japan.
Wagué has made 23 appearances for the Eupen senior team, and has a lot of potential. He has been brought in so that he can act as backup to Nélson Semedo as Sergi Roberto moves into midfield.
That role belongs to Sergi Palencia, and the club is doing an injustice to the 21-year old La Masia graduate by signing Moussa Wagué at such a point in his career. While it is true that Wagué has a lot of potential, Sergi Palencia deserves a call-up to the first-team squad.
Now, it would not be uncalled for if Sergi Palencia attempted to find a way out of the club. He has been passed up too many times, and he has the ability to make it on the big stage.
