Barcelona have ensured that they can benefit if Yerry Mina turns into a top defender during his time with the Toffees.

Everton have proved to be a major ally for Barcelona in this transfer window because they bought three unwanted players from the Catalans. Lucas Digne, Mina and Andre Gomes were all brought in with the first two costing £45.41 million and Gomes joining on loan.

The Colombian defender had an excellent World Cup which helped distract from his issues adapting into Barcelona’s style. His three goals helped guide Colombia through the group stages as well as taking the round of 16 tie against England to extra-time where they were beaten on penalties.

Barcelona will be glad that he impressed so much during the summer because it inflated his value and led to Everton signing him for £27.23 million. He isn’t a good stylistic fit currently and presents an issue due to not having a European passport. The 23-year-old only cost the club £10.62 million in January, which means they made a profit of just over £16 million so this is a good piece of business.

He could still be involved in the club’s future plans, though. Marca are reporting that he has a €60 million release clause in his contract. Therefore, the Barcelona board have acted smartly because they can also benefit if he develops significantly during his time in England.

There is a difference in styles between the two clubs, though, so there would still be a period of adjustment if he joined the Catalans in the future. However, his experience might take the mistakes out of his game and help deal with the mental pressures that come with playing for such a big club.

He may never be at the required level, but the club still benefits because of the profit they have made, so it’s a win-win scenario. Barcelona were never going to be able to give him the playing time he required to fully adapt because of the impact it could have on results. The high defensive line and reliance on defenders who are not only comfortable on the ball but capable of breaking opposition lines means mistakes can be very costly.

At the very least, he should be a success at Everton because he has the physical and technical attributes to adapt to the league. The focus will be more on the defensive side of his game rather than how he can help break up the opposition defensive shape, although his danger from set pieces will be useful. Phil Jagielka provided a timely remainder against Wolves of why Mina is needed. This is a rare move in that it is good for all parties, but the buyback gives Barcelona insurance.
