Barcelona: Sergi Palencia joins Bordeaux on one-year loan
Barcelona do not want to let go of Sergi Palencia permanently
Barcelona may have overlooked Sergi Palencia for a call-up to the first-team squad this season, but the management still feels that Moussa Wagué is an unsafe bet. The 19-year old Senegalese right-back is highly inexperienced.
The club need a young right-back who can act as backup to Nélson Semedo, so that Sergi Roberto can move into midfield. Sergi Palencia had been groomed for that ever since he was awarded the captaincy of the B team, but never got the promotion.

With Moussa Wagué’s signing this season, Palencia would have stiff competition for the first-team spot despite being captain. So, he has joined Bordeaux on loan for the entire season, but the Ligue 1 club will not have any option to make the move permanent.
Wagué did well for his national team at the World Cup, scoring once in Russia. But he has not played in any continental competition and has made just 23 appearances for Belgian club KAS Eupen, who are never contenders for the Pro League title.
If he fails to impress Xavi García Pimienta in the upcoming season, the 19-year old speedster may be relegated to the bench in favour of Sergi Palencia. But if he does well, then Palencia may have to find a way out of the Camp Nou.
There is another possibility too. If both Wagué and Palencia do well for their respective sides, Sergi Palencia may finally receive a call-up to the first-team next season while Wagué can have a chance to sustain his growth at Barça B.
