Should Barcelona scout Rodrigo?

Valencia found a gem in the rough when they signed Rodrigo from Benfica four seasons ago. The Brazilian-born Spanish striker was relatively unknown, and he couldn’t hit the ground running at the Mestalla, scoring just 4 goals in 32 appearances in his first season.

The next two seasons were mediocre, as the likes of Gary Neville and Pako Ayestarán failed to get the best out of Rodrigo. But after his appointment, Marcelino made the 27-year old forward the leader of the attack and got dividends.

In his 44 appearances across all competitions, Rodrigo scored 19 goals and provided 4 assists. He is a proper fit for the La Liga and can convert chances. He also has a lot of experience in Europe, scoring 9 goals in 37 appearances in the Europa League and the Champions League.

More from Everything Barca

This season, Rodrigo is set to break out onto the scene. Last season, he gave the world of football a taste of his ability and this season, he has already scored in the first game of the season. Rodrigo is about to enter his prime.

It seems like he possesses all the traits required to be a success at Barcelona. He is a very good passer, is very quick, can get past defenders, can hold up the ball and is a clinical finisher, even from outside the box and with his head.

Rodrigo is a huge threat from counter-attacks, and has the ability to set up other players, despite his poor crossing. But despite some dissimilarities with ‘El Pistolero’, he does have the ability to succeed the 32-year old Uruguayan forward.

Valencia have rebuffed advances from several top European clubs for Rodrigo this summer, most notably Real Madrid. But next summer, the scenario could chance if Rodrigo can improve on his record from last season.

As for now, Éric Abidal should add Rodrigo to his shortlist, and should monitor his progress along with Timo Werner.
