Barcelona are looking at Kevin Kampl as an alternative to Adrien Rabiot

Barcelona have been unable to reach an agreement with either Paris Saint-Germain or Ajax for Adrien Rabiot and Ajax. So, the club is looking at other options, and Kevin Kampl is a name that has emerged.

The 27-year old Slovenian midfielder has done very well for RB Leipzig since moving from Bayer Leverkusen. Especially last season, he played in the pivot role with ease and worked brilliantly with now Liverpool player Naby Keita.

This summer, Kampl has attracted the interest of Atlético. The Madrid giants will be joined by Barcelona in the race for Kampl’s signature. But there are doubts as to whether Kampl would be the right signing for the club.

It is clear that Sergio Busquets needs a successor. He is 30, and will last for at least 5 more seasons before declining. But when he does, there needs to be a player in the squad who can succeed him in the starting lineup.

But in 5 seasons, Kevin Kampl will already be 32, and in no position to take over as the team’s leader in midfield. If he joins now, he can certainly act as backup to Busquets, but the Slovenian defensive midfielder is not what the club needs right now.

Éric Abidal should keep going after the club’s primary targets, and focus on Frenkie de Jong, since Paris Saint-Germain are determined to keep Adrien Rabiot at any cost. Ajax are relatively flexible, and Abidal should try to rope De Jong in, even if it for next season.
