Barcelona readying €60 million bid to sign Frenkie de Jong early
Barcelona are aiming to agree a deal with Ajax before Frenkie de Jong’s value rises even higher and interest in him increases.
The summer transfer window may be shut, but that doesn’t mean Barcelona’s transfer dealings have stopped. Frenkie de Jong is still the main target for the club due to his range of abilities suggesting that he would fit into the team perfectly. Ajax were able to successfully navigate through the qualifying rounds to the Champions League group stage, which meant that De Jong didn’t move this summer.
This will be his first season in the Champions League, so his talent will be on display to a large audience which means he is likely to attract more suitors. Benfica and AEK Athens are teams that the Dutch side should be able to beat, but the real test will be against Bayern Munich. Good performances in these games, especially against Bayern, could see De Jong’s value skyrocket.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are preparing a €60 million bid for De Jong, so that they can secure his transfer for next summer. Tottenham Hotspur and PSG are two other clubs that are rumoured to be interested him. The list of suitors is only likely to increase because he is the ideal midfielder for a possession-based team, and, at 21-years-old, he has a promising future ahead of him.

Eric Abidal, Pep Segura and Ramon Planes have the right idea in trying to come to an early agreement for his transfer next summer because it means they are insured in case his value rises. The 21-year-old prefers the Catalans over other clubs, but a move isn’t guaranteed if top sides become interested next summer due to the fact that he could opt for the team that offers him the most playing time.
Ajax are a team that have become used to selling their top talents over recent seasons, with Davinson Sanchez and Justin Kluivert being prime examples, so they will know how valuable De Jong is and how his price could rise even further due to exposure across Europe thanks to the Champions League. Therefore, they are unlikely to accept an early agreement, even though €60 million is a good offer, because they would benefit from a bidding war for him next summer.
Barcelona may have to be patient and compete for his signature next summer, however, he will be worth it. PSG can offer him a better contract as well as a large transfer fee to the club while Tottenham have a starting spot available, but he favours a move to Barca which could be key in influencing his choice.
