Barcelona should look into possible successors to Gerard Piqué

Ever since he rejoined Barcelona from Manchester United, Gerard Piqué has held down a place in the first-team. He has been the constant in a variety of defensive combinations over the years, including with Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and now with Samuel Umtiti.

But unlike his predecessor and fellow La Masia graduate Carles Puyol, he hasn’t been able to lead from the front with his performances. In recent times, the 32-year old former Spain international has made crucial mistakes which have led to goals, most notably in the 2-1 loss to Leganés.

Certainly, a defence with two left-footed centre-backs is not a possibility. So, Clément Lenglet can be ruled out as a potential successor to Piqué. The 22-year old French centre-back will never be in the Barça first-team as long as Samuel Umtiti is at the club.

Hence, Éric Abidal will need to sign a young centre-back to act as an understudy to Gerard Piqué, and eventually replace him in the first-team.
