Barcelona should scout River Plate starlet Lucas Martínez
Lucas Martínez is one of the rising stars of Argentine football
Since signing Lionel Messi from the Newell’s Old Boys youth academy, Barcelona have not recruited talent from Argentina. The club’s scouting network in Argentina is still going strong, and it should look into some hot prospects who are making a name for themselves.
The club has registered interest in signing River Plate youngster Exequiel Palacios, but he is likely to join either Inter Milan or Real Madrid. Also, the squad doesn’t need another midfield. What the squad does need is a centre-back, and Palacios’ teammate could fulfill the club’s requirements.

Ever since he broke into the River Plate first-team in 2016, Lucas Martínez has continued to develop. The 22-year old Argentine centre-back has made 39 appearances in all competitions, including 7 appearances in the Copa Libertadores.
Martínez is a very good passer of the ball, and possesses the ability to build attacks from the back. He is also very focused, and is very strong in the air, having scored 3 goals. But Martínez also has a tendency to get stuck in, and has received 8 bookings in his career, including a red card.
He has huge potential, and could become one of the best defenders in the world in the future. Martínez is yet to make his international debut, but could do so in the future if he continues developing at this rate.
Ramón Planes should consider signing Martínez, after having visited Argentina quite a few times in the last few weeks. River Plate will be reluctant to let him go, but Barcelona is an exciting prospect for any youngster.
