Ivan Rakitić in the 28th spot

Croatia captain Luka Modrić led the Goal 50 rankings in 1st place, but his midfield counterpart Ivan Rakitić languished in the 28th position. Modrić may have provided the flair in the Vatreni’s run up to the World Cup final, but Rakitić did most of the dirty work.

He also had the best season of his career with Barcelona. Despite ending the club season with just 4 goals, he was arguably the side’s second-best player, behind maverick Leo Messi. The 30-year old creative playmaker showed why he is considered one of the best midfielders in the world.

Rakitić should have occupied a higher position, especially considering that the likes of Sadio Mané, Mario Mandžukić, David de Gea and Christian Eriksen ranked above him. All of these players had good seasons, but could not come close to Rakitić’s amazing consistency.
