Frenkie de Jong has given his consent to talks between Barcelona and Ajax

After considering offers from Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax’s 21-year old Dutch defensive midfielder has chosen Barcelona as his future club of choice, effectively giving the green light to negotiations between Barça and Ajax.

The club has been tracking him for a long time, along with PSG’s Adrien Rabiot. This development is a positive one, with PSG also agreeing to offload Rabiot for as little as €5 million in January if Barcelona wish to take up that offer.

Ajax have been demanding upwards of €70 million for De Jong’s signature. That is excessive, according to Éric Abidal. Barça are willing to offer €60 million to sign the young Netherlands international, but not much more than that.

Frenkie de Jong’s representatives travelled to the Catalan capital to negotiate his future contract. The club negotiated a five-year deal, but couldn’t match the salary offered by the other clubs. But the club expressed tremendous belief in his potential.

Moreover, Barça have a very rich history of Dutch stars at the club, which may have played a very big part in convincing Frenkie de Jong to join. But the negotiations is far from complete, and Éric Abidal will still have to negotiate with the headstrong Marc Overmars to seal the deal.

De Jong will be expensive, but his potential will make every penny spent on him worth it. Regardless, he is a much better option than Adrien Rabiot, who is known for his unruly behaviour and insubordination.
