Barcelona secured the 3 points to go 5 points clear at the top of the La Liga table

Barcelona went into the first fixture of 2019 with key first-team player Sergio Busquets on the bench. The atmosphere at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez in south Madrid was a very hostile, but Barcelona came away with a 2-1 victory.

The first few minutes of the match were quite competitive, with Getafe looking up for it. But as the game progressed, they lost enthusiasm due to Barça’s prolonged periods of possession. The side broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Leo Messi.

After Arthur’s lofted ball towards Luis Suárez in the box was intercepted by the Uruguayan’s compatriot and namesake Damián Suárez, it fell in between two Getafe defenders. But Messi managed to bulldoze through, get it past David Soria, and finish from a very difficult angle.

Following this, Barcelona dominated possession totally, culminating in an extension of the lead in the 39th minute, after several missed chances. Lionel Messi’s ball into the box from a set-piece was improperly cleared, and it fell to Luis Suárez, who buried it with a sweet volley.

David Soria got a hand to Suárez’s dazzling strike, but couldn’t keep it out. But Getafe responded just before half-time. Left-back Antunes was afforded time and space, and he put in a cross to the far post towards Ángel, who passed it to Jaime Mata for a simple tap-in.

Getafe came into the second-half with all guns blazing, and put Barcelona under serious pressure. In the 67th minute, Jorge Molina made an excellent run into the box and got in behind Marc-André ter Stegen. But he lost his footing at the crucial moment, and missed an open net.

Leo Messi had an opportunity to kill off the game, but David Soria denied the Argentine maestro with a brilliant save off a curler from outside the box. Ousmane Dembélé diverted the rebound towards Suárez, but Djené’s anticipation kept Getafe in the game, but they failed to come back.

Djené was one of the best players on the pitch, along with substitute Samu Sáiz. But undoubtedly, the man-of-the-match has to go to Lionel Messi for his flawless display of skill. Ousmane Dembélé and Luis Suárez, too, had a good game.

The most important consequence of this 2-1 victory over Getafe is the fact that Barcelona are 10 points clear of Real Madrid, and 5 point clear of Atlético Madrid, the two sides who were considered as contenders for the league title early on in the season.
