Paris Saint-Germain set to beat Barcelona to Frenkie de Jong
Frenkie de Jong has seemingly changed his mind about moving to Barcelona
A few weeks earlier, an agreement between Ajax and Barcelona for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong seemed imminent. But now, Paris Saint-Germain have hijacked the deal and entered the race for his signature at a very late stage, delivering a crushing blow to all interested clubs.
With Adrien Rabiot leaving at the end of the season, PSG have offered De Jong a place in the first-team and very high wages. Barcelona have offered neither. Sergio Busquets is a permanent member of the first-team and the wage bill is already very high.
While Frenkie de Jong was earlier attracted to Barça because of the Dutch superstars who flourished at the Camp Nou, regular playing time and a higher salary seems to be more attractive to him. The 21-year old defensive midfielder is partially justified in that.

A player of his age and potential needs as much playing time as possible in order to develop. He will have a better environment, higher-quality teammates and a legendary sporting culture in the Catalan capital, but will be restricted to the bench for most of the season.
At PSG, he gets state-of-the-art facilities and 90 minutes in almost every single game, although in a less-competitive league. That is with the added bonus of a huge salary. This should worry Éric Abidal, especially with Adrien Rabiot also looking elsewhere.
De Jong is a better option to the Frenchman because of his higher potential, and youth. Also, Rabiot’s temperamental and arrogant nature would require changes to fit in at Barcelona. But the club hasn’t found an alternative to the Dutchman apart from Rabiot.
Rabiot’s mother, Veronique Rabiot, shrewd and stubborn workings in the transfer market is leading to centrifugal tendencies, especially with Chelsea and Bayern Munich highly interested in signing him. Now, Barça should either make a quick swoop for De Jong or finalise the Rabiot deal.
