Barcelona go after São Paulo youngster Gabriel Novaes on deadline day
Barcelona are targeting young Brazilian forward Gabriel Novaes
Along with Jean-Clair Todibo and Emerson, Barcelona are after a third youngster on deadline day of the January transfer window. The new target is São Paulo’s 19-year old Brazilian centre-forward Gabriel Novaes, who has shown great potential this season.
It will be a complicated deal, because the registration procedure for Segunda División B requires a lot of time. Summer signing Moussa Wagué faced the same problem, and could not make his debut for Barça B till November.

Novaes join the club on a one-and-a-half year loan deal till 2020. But immediately after joining, the starlet will leave on loan yet again, spending the rest of the season at Nàstic in the Segunda División. It is very rare that a player goes on loan from his loan club.
But the youngster will return in the summer. If he can impress at Barcelona B in the 2019/20, the club can look into making the move permanent. La Masia has not produced good centre-forwards in recent times, other than Abel Ruiz. Novaes could make up for that.
Barça are hoping that Gabriel Novaes will turn out to be a diamond in the rough. He is yet to gain recognition in Brazil, and has not made his debut for the São Paulo first-team. Neither has he attracted attention from Europe’s elite, like the likes of Rodrygo.
While Novaes could be an amazing find by the club scouts in Brazil, he could also be a failure. The club has a history of poor scouting in Brazil. Keirrison is a good example of that, while Yerry Mina and Vitinho are recent examples. Neymar is a notable exception.
