Zinedine Zidane has been reappointed as Real Madrid manager.

Consecutive defeats at the hands of Barcelona followed by the embarrassment faced by Los Blancos in the Champions League that essentially knocked them out of three competitions in a week made it clear that it was just a matter of time before Santiago Solari would be sacked. The main talking point, however, was who would be the next manager to replace the 42-year-old.

Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho were both heavily linked with Florentino Perez’s club, but in the end, Zinedine Zidane has returned. Zidane served Real Madrid for two years as manager before leaving the club at the start of this season. During his tenure, the 46-year-old created history by winning three Champions Leagues in a row.

The chemistry he shared with the dressing room through his excellent man management skills made it very easy for the club to demonstrate confidence and performance on the field. This love for the club and the players as well as the ability to finally make the changes he desired in the summer appears to have convinced him to return.

The newly appointed manager will definitely try to sign a star player for the forward line as they failed to replace Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Harry Kane, and Eden Hazard are all potential targets that Real are likely to consider pursuing. This should be enough to rejuvenate the Spanish giants. It will create a much bigger challenge for the Catalans. Ernesto Valverde will evidently need to be at his best next season.

Though the French legend’s return will be a warning to Barcelona, it will also mean that the Clasicos will regain their intensity and excitement. The aggressive strategy utilised by the 46-year-old will help to maintain a vigorous competition between the two Spanish giants. It will be a victory for La Liga and football fans as a whole to see the two sides pushing each other to the limit.
