Barcelona anoint Maxi Gómez as successor to Luis Suárez
Barcelona want Maxi Gómez as the successor to Luis Suárez
Celta Vigo’s current form points towards relegation for the Galicians. They have picked up a mere 6 victories all season, and lie in 18th place in the La Liga table. If the season ends this way, it will be good news for Barcelona with respect to summer transfer plans.
Maxi Gómez is the second-highest goalscorer for Celta this season. He has scored 9 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions this season. The 22-year old Uruguayan centre-forward has improved significantly this season. He has also provided 5 assists.
But last season’s brilliant form still lingers in the memory of Barça scouts. Gómez scored 19 goals and provided 5 assists in 39 appearances in all competitions. Now, the club has prioritised Gómez’s signing as a successor to his compatriot Luis Suárez.

Maxi Gómez has a release clause of €50 million. But if Celta get relegated this season, it will get reduced to €25 million. That will obviously mean that all his suitors will jump in and activate his release clause. In that case, Éric Abidal’s skills will be put to the test.
Gómez has just the skill-set to eventually replace a player like Suárez in the Barça first-team. He is familiar with the La Liga, and €25 million would be a huge bargain. The club feel that Gómez is better than Suárez was at the same age, when he was at Ajax.
Chelsea and Liverpool are very interested in securing Gómez’s services. Barça need to beat them to Gómez. But the prospect of succeeding his international teammate at a club like Barça should be very exciting for Gómez.
