Barcelona will have 4 brand new kits next season

Ever since the Catalan independence movement caused a stir about 2 years ago, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has openly expressed his support for Catalan leaders. The club’s Catalan roots will manifest itself in the kits for next season.

All the kits will undergo changes for the 2019/20 season, with the addition of a new, historic fourth kit. In all of Barça’s 119-year old history, the first-team has had two kits, and added a third in the ears of the presidency of Josep Lluís Núñez

The current home kit is collarless, with a blue sleeve. The shirt itself has vertical claret and blue stripes, with blue shorts. The socks have horizontal claret-blue stripes. But from the 2019/20 season, a major, almost revolutionary, change will be made.

The shorts and the sleeves will undergo no changes, but collars will be re-introduced, with the interior having the colours of the Catalan flag.  The main shirt pattern will have Croatia-esque checkers of claret and blue, with the same pattern in the socks.

The away kit for the 2018/19 season is solid lime-coloured. Because of that, it is going to undergo many changes for next season. The away kit for next season is going to be based on the corresponding kit from 1975-80, and then in the 2008/09 season.

From 1975 to 1980, the away kit was yellow with a diagonal claret-blue combo from left to right. The 2019/20 away kit is going to be the exact copy, with the diagonal going into the opposite direction. The change in the third kit is slightly underwhelming.

The present third kit has a main colour of light pink, with the imprint of famous Barcelona district Eixample in claret and metallic silver. For next season, it is going to be a modern kit based on two shades of turquoise and claret, based on the 90s third kit.

But the biggest and most talked-about change in overall kit policy is the introduction of the fourth kit. Barça will follow European giants Manchester United, Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in taking this decision, but it is purely political.

In a touching tribute to Catalonia, the fourth kit will be based on the Senyera, a flag of Aragonese origin. According to Catalan legend, the Count of Barcelona Guifre el Pilos passed his bloody fingers over a golden badge after a battle against the French.

It is a representative of that myth, with four incomplete diagonal red stripes over a yellow basic colour of the kit. This decision to sure to fuel tensions in the La Liga, which has long been the platform for such political gestures, adding to rivalries between Catalan and Castilian teams.
