Barcelona could revive efforts to sign former target Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann rejected a move to Barcelona last summer after a high-profile transfer saga, in a documentary. But despite his theatrics, the World Cup winner is now looking for a way out of Atlético Madrid after the promises made to him were left unfulfilled.

He had stayed on at Atlético because the management had convinced him of Atlético’s ability to win titles. Griezmann had penned a 5-year contract, with his release clause rising from the previously feasible €100 million to €200 million.

But Atlético have failed miserably this season, even after Real Madrid’s inconsistency. Their title hopes effectively ended with an away loss to Athletic Bilbao, and they have been eliminated by Girona and Juventus in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Looking at Griezmann’s situation at the Wanda Metropolitano, Barça are going after the 27-year old centre-forward yet again. This season, he has scored 18 goals and provided 8 assists in 38 appearances in all competitions, which is a superb return.

But considering Luis Suárez’s recent resurgence, it would make no sense to sign Griezmann now. The former Real Sociedad man is going to cost €120 million, which is a huge amount. There are cheaper options, who arguably have the same potential and are much younger.

Luka Jović is one such player, and spending €120 million on a 27-year old superstar would be no better than investing €50 million in a future world-class striker. So, Antoine Griezmann should be retained as a backup option while younger players should be prioritised.
