Barcelona sent Denis Suárez out on loan with the hopes of offloading him

It is clear from Ernesto Valverde’s treatment of Denis Suárez that he does not feature in the Basque coach’s plans. The La Masia graduate simply doesn’t fit into Valverde’s tactical setup, and that means that his future lies away from Barcelona.

The 25-year old Spaniard was sent out on loan to Arsenal after having made just 8 appearances in all competitions. Unai Emery had had a big role in his development at Sevilla, and wanted to work with him again at the Emirates.

So, the Gunners entered into negotiations with Barça, which carried on for quite some time before the club confirmed his temporary departure. The fee required to make the move permanent was set at €20 million, which could give the club a healthy profit of €16 million.

But Denis Suárez’s time at Arsenal is being termed a total failure, and rightfully so. He has been less-than-convincing in his performances, despite being a favourite of Emery. The playmaker is yet to make his first start for the Gunners.

He has made 6 appearances in all competitions, but all of them have been off the bench. He has been so unimpressive that Arsenal are considering cancelling his loan and sending him back to Barça. If that indeed happened, it would defeat the very purpose of the deal.

Barça had loaned him out to a top Premier League club so that he could rebuild his reputation with some minutes, and earn a move to Arsenal or to some other club. But if he returns to the club at this stage in the season, the clubs who were lining up to sign him in January will disappear.
