Ajax have received a €60 million offer for Matthijs de Ligt from Barcelona

After contemplating, Barcelona have decided to go all in for Matthijs de Ligt. The Ajax captain has been the subject of intense interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and especially Juventus. The club want to snap him up before other clubs come in for him.

Barça have already sealed the summer signing of De Ligt’s Ajax teammate, Frenkie de Jong. The club is looking to reunite the two childhood teammates, with De Jong succeeding Sergio Busquets in the first-team, and De Ligt succeeding Gerard Piqué.

Éric Abidal had originally approached his Ajax counterpart Marc Overmars with a proposal in the build-up to the January transfer window, when negotiations for De Jong had begun. But Ajax were not looking to enter negotiations for De Ligt at that stage in the season.

But as the season is reaching its business end, Barça have submitted an offer for Matthijs de Ligt, of €60 million plus variables. A five-year contract has been offered to the player. The offer should very close to Ajax’s demand of €70 million for the 19-year old Dutch centre-back.

This offer brings Barça precariously close to completing the signing of De Ligt. The Netherlands international has expressed interest in a move to the Camp Nou on many occasions, and one meeting between representatives of the two clubs will iron out the details.

Now, Barça are one step ahead of all the other clubs interested in signing him. The club will probably avoid a bidding war by sealing the deal soon. De Ligt has also been given assurance of the importance he will assume if he joins.
