Barcelona are one of the founder clubs in the proposed European Super League

UEFA is considering making some revolutionary changes to the footballing structure in Europe. As one of the biggest clubs in the world, Barcelona are at the forefront of the remodeling as one of the founder clubs. But the structure of the new premier tournament is still cloudy.

Till date, Premier League clubs have been heading the talks for a ‘new Champions League’. Perhaps it is because of the fact that English clubs have not had the best record in the existing main European competition in the 21st century.

Earlier, Florentino Pérez had also asked for a European Super League. But UEFA considered it seriously for the first time after American real estate mogul Stephen M. Ross called talks regarding the reforms with the Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The idea has a lot of takers in the upper echelons of European football, with high-profile managers Arsène Wenger and Gordon Strachan advocating it. Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf has supported it. But now, the Serie A giants are championing the idea.

Unlike the previous propositions, this time around, there is a consensus among the top clubs of Europe. The list of clubs are:

Spain: Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid
Italy: Juventus, AC Milan, Roma, Inter Milan
England: Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea
France: Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain
Germany: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund

The European Super League is not the finalised name of the revised competition, but the first edition is going to take place in 2024. The 16 founder clubs will be exempt from regulations, with the value of the TV rights at around the €900 million mark.

It will involve 32 clubs. But the most important change will be that of schedule. Currently, the leagues are considered the most important competition, and takes place on weekends, when viewership and attendance is high.

But with the introduction of the European Super League, the league matches will be shifted to mid-week while the European matches will take place on weekends. It is going to be a blow to domestic football around Europe, and would be unfair to the smaller clubs.

Of course, the end product could be quite different from the initial proposal. The current proposition will be subjected to intense scrutiny from UEFA and will be negotiated for a long time. But whatever happens in the end, it will be groundbreaking for European football.
