Filipe Luís would be content with a secondary role at Barcelona
Filipe Luís would not be unhappy with a backup role in the Barcelona squad
Although Nicolás Tagliafico has now become the priority target of Barcelona for the left-back role, the club has plenty of backup options. One alternative is experienced Atlético left-back Filipe Luís, whose contract is up at the end of the season.
His time at the top is nearly over, with the Brazilian’s international career mostly being overshadowed by the likes of Marcelo and Alex Sandro. Luís would prefer a move to Barça in order to have a final opportunity at ultimate European glory.
Barça would need to find Tagliafico to be content with a secondary role in the squad, behind first-choice Jordi Alba in the pecking order. The Argentina international enjoys a lot of playing time at Ajax, and it would be significantly cut down.

The same problem is not going to arise with Luís. The ageing star has expressed that he would be happy as a backup to Alba. But nevertheless, he can never be Barça’s first-choice target. Luís is simply too old to be a long-term occupant of the left-back position in the first-team.
On the other hand, Nicolás Tagliafico is slowly entering his prime at 26 years of age, and has gained considerable experience over the last year with an Ajax side with a penchant for causing huge upsets. For example, he was instrumental in Real Madrid’s Champions League elimination.
He has attracted a lot of suitors with his performances this season. If Barça do lose out on Tagliafico, Filipe Luís can emerge as a short-term solution to be moved on in the next summer transfer window.
