Barcelona have added English left-back Ben Chilwell to the summer shortlist

The left-back situation in the squad is currently precarious, and Barcelona are actively seeking a solution in the upcoming summer transfer window. There are many players being considered, including ageing Atlético star Filipe Luís and former La Masia youngster Álex Moreno.

But a new name has been added to the shortlist in highly-rated English left-back Ben Chilwell. The Leicester youngster has been making waves this season, even making his international debut. Thus, Chilwell has been the subject of interest from top Premier League sides.

Manchester City are the frontrunners in the race for his signature, while Arsenal are also very interested. But now, Barça and Atlético have entered the fray. As a result, Leicester City have placed a €58 million price tag on their prized possession.

Although the Citizens may have the financial might to pay €58 million, Barça certainly don’t. The club’s priority in the summer is going to be a new centre-back, preferably Matthijs de Ligt. That signing is going to take up a significant portion of the club’s transfer funds.

The 22-year old full-back is talented, and his ability to adapt to the fast-paced football of the Premier League means that he can succeed Jordi Alba in the Barça first-team. But the Chilwell signing still hinges on whether Éric Abidal can negotiate an acceptable fee.

Regardless, Chilwell is unlikely to be the first-choice signing. Álex Moreno has been quite impressive for Rayo Vallecano this season, while Filipe Luís is a great short-term solution. Barça could also decide to buy back Marc Cucurella after he joins Eibar in a permanent deal.

It is highly likely that Manchester City already sign Ben Chilwell by the time Barça go through all the other options.
