Jasper Cillessen is finally fed up with Barcelona’s treatment of him
Jasper Cillessen has effectively wasted 3 years of his prime at Barcelona
José Manuel Pinto is one of those who can claim to have a glittering array of medals, but is actually a very ordinary player. But that is not the case for Jasper Cillessen, who made the incorrect decision by moving to Barcelona at the height of his prime.
Cillessen was brought in from Ajax as a replacement for Claudio Bravo, who had joined Manchester City. In his 3 years at the club, the Netherlands international has been nothing but absolutely excellent but has been able to make just 28 appearances in all competitions.
In fact, Cillessen could fulfill his potential only at Barça. Earlier, he had been plying his trade in a sub-standard league compared to European elite standards. But he was still denied the opportunity to compete with Marc-André ter Stegen for playing time.
When there are two world-class goalkeepers in a squad, the manager usually gives them equal opportunities to prove their worth in a healthy competition. The best example of this policy can be found at Real Madrid, where Keylor Navas and Thibaut Courtois have competed for game time.

But Ernesto Valverde always gave preference to Ter Stegen over Cillessen, regardless of the performance of the two players. Now, the Dutchman is fed up and has decided that he wants a move away from Barça in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 30-year old shot-stopper has been treated unfairly at the club, despite the fact that his move coincided with the emergence of Ter Stegen as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Cillessen’s decision to pursue a transfer is justified, and Barça are to blame.
"He said, “I’m going on holiday and then I hope that I’ll have a new club to play for. Because I want to play.”"
There will be no dearth of suitors for Cillessen. Last summer, he had attracted interest from the likes of Juventus. But all potential buyers were told to activate his €60 million release clause, and this meant that he would stay on for another season.
But after making only 7 appearances this season, Cillessen will be allowed to leave in the summer. But Barça will probably make a big profit after signing the Netherlands international for a bargain fee of €13 million. His previous suitors are also expected to reignite interest.
