Barcelona could leverage Benfica’s interest in Marc Cucurella

Marc Cucurella is set to return to his parent club in a buy-back deal after recently signing for Eibar. He has had a successful loan spell under José Luis Mendilibar, but Barcelona want him back. But the La Masia graduate is not expected to stay.

There are many clubs interested in signing Cucurella. AC Milan had registered early interest, while Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach are also suitors. But there is a new entrant in the race for his signature, Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Águias want the 20-year old Spanish left-back to act as backup to fellow La Masia graduate Álex Grimaldo. Now, Marc Cucurella’s value could increase because he has been called up to the Spain squad for the European U-21 Championships.

Barça could use Cucurella in a deal involving João Félix, the 19-year old Portuguese sensation who has attracted intense interest from Europe’s elite. The starlet has been on the radar of club scouts for a while now, and is a star of tomorrow.

Of course, Cucurella is a nobody when compared to Félix in terms of hype. But a left-back signing is almost as important for Benfica as it is for Barça. Cucurella could just become the next Grimaldo, and thus, Benfica could rate him highly.

Félix would cost upwards of €100 million, but Cucurella could bring it down under that mark. Only recently, bids from Manchester City and Benfica were rejected by Benfica. But Barça could sweeten the deal for the defending Primeira Liga champions by offering Cucurella.
