Barcelona are yet to negotiate a departure for Jasper Cillessen

Jasper Cillessen has already announced that he is going to be leaving this summer. But according to the Dutchman, Barcelona are not fulfilling their obligations by refusing to let him go for a low fee. This is because of the release clause in his contract.

When Cillessen left Ajax to join Barça, he penned a 5-year deal with a release clause of €60 million. The club demanded the activation of his release clause last summer, when the likes of Juventus had shown interest in signing the Netherlands international.

This summer, Barça did not ask for €60 million as the amount would be totally ridiculous. But the club still has refused to accept offers from Benfica which hovered around €15 million, while Barça want upwards of €20 million for the 30-year old shot-stopper.

To be fair, Cillessen hasn’t helped his cause. The experienced goalkeeper produced an ordinary performance in the Copa del Rey final, and was average at best for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. This may have brought down his transfer value.

But regardless, Barça should try and negotiate a deal for Cillessen if he really does not want to stay at the club any longer. He has been wronged by Ernesto Valverde, who has denied him opportunities in the first-team irrespective of his performances.

Also, Barça could bag a profit by offloading Cillessen. La Masia graduate Iñaki Peña could also find an opportunity in the first-team squad if the Dutchman leaves.
