Ecuador youth international is set to reinforce the Barcelona B squad
After making three signings from Dutch clubs this summer, Barcelona are again looking to the Netherlands for young talent. But this time, the player is not Dutch. It is 19-year old Ecuadorian left-back Diego Palacios, whose loan spell at Willem II last season brought him to attention.
Palacios joined Willem II on loan from Aucas last summer, and was a revelation under Adrie Koster. The youngster made 32 appearances in all competitions, and found the back of the net on three occasions. Palacios showed great flair bombing down the left flank.
The 19-year old Ecuador youth international has also attracted interest from PSV Eindhoven and Lyon. But he prefers a move to Barça, despite the fact that he would have to play in Barcelona B before being considered for a call-up to the first-team squad.
Barça are in the process of negotiating a deal with Aucas for Palacios, and there are ongoing talks regarding the registration of the non-EU player. But hopefully, there will not be a repeat of the Moussa Wagué situation, where he was not allowed to play for months.
Recently, Palacios’ market value has taken an upward turn. He was an important member of the Ecuadorian squad in the U-20 World Cup, which reached the semi-final before being beaten by South Korea. This could mean that Barça could end up paying a little more than expected.
Regardless, this would be a good signing. Barça have been struggling with the left-back situation for quite a while, with no proper backup for Jordi Alba. Palacios can provide competition to Juan Miranda, and it can elevate the level of both their performances.
