Barcelona have offloaded Denis Suárez to Celta Vigo

Denis Suárez’s value has dropped significantly due to his loan spell at Arsenal. But regardless, Barcelona have been able to profit on him. Valencia have lost out on him, and the former Sevilla man has joined Celta Vigo in a €16 million deal.

The 25-year old Spaniard was one of Robert Fernández’s rare good signings, as Barça brought him in from Villarreal in a buy-back deal worth €4.25 million. Now, Éric Abidal has been able to secure a €12 million profit for Barça.

This is a good piece of business, unlike André Gomes’ departure. The Portugal international joined Everton permanently after a moderately successful season on loan in a €25 million deal. This left Barça €10 million in the red, which has now been accounted for.

A replacement does not need to be brought in for either of these players, especially not Denis Suárez. The squad has enough midfielders with an attacking mentality. Moreover, his performance under Ernesto Valverde was miserable.

The flamboyant playmaker had ‘Barça DNA’, but his inability to adapt to Valverde’s tactics meant that the La Masia graduate was denied opportunities. Denis found the back of the net on a few occasions against minnows in the Copa del Rey, but that was about it.

At Celta, he will have the chance to flourish and maybe even earn a call-up to the Spain national team. It is where his career began, and a return to his roots could see him unlock his full potential and unleash it on the La Liga.
