Barcelona have a suitor for the wantaway Malcom

It is no secret that Malcom is unhappy. After subverting a move to Roma at the last minute, the young Brazil international joined Barcelona last summer with great hope. But his expectations have been left unfulfilled, as he has languished on the bench.

Malcom had started attracting interest as early as the January transfer window, with Arsenal wanting to sign him on loan. But the move never worked out. The Gunners have sustained their interest, but are yet to submit a formal transfer offer.

On the other hand, Barça have received the first bid of the summer for Malcom. It is from Borussia Dortmund, who are offering €42 million for the ex-Bordeaux man. It is €1 million higher than what Barça paid for him, giving the club a small profit.

But the question is, should Barça accept Dortmund’s offer and let Malcom go? That would be the fiscally responsible decision. But as Ernesto Valverde said recently, football is not all about making money. Malcom does deserve another opportunity.

His time at Bordeaux proves that the 21-year old winger is extremely talented. He is gifted with tremendous pace, and possesses very good crossing. His long-range shooting also makes him a very useful asset for any squad.

If Philippe Coutinho does end up leaving, Valverde will find ample time to give Malcom opportunities down the right flank. The young attacker mostly operated down the left last season, to little success and underwhelming profligacy.

Barça should remember what happened the last time it offloaded a fringe player to Dortmund. Paco Alcácer’s departure should serve as an example of poor decision-making when it comes to letting go of players.
