Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho is set to move to Bayern on loan

In the past, Bayern Munich have shown an interest in superstars who have discarded by other big clubs. It is probably because superstars seldom look to Bavaria to further their careers nowadays. But regardless, Barcelona want to take advantage of that.

The summer before last, Bayern signed James Rodríguez from Real Madrid on a two-year loan. The Bavarians also had an option to make the move permanent, which they did not exercise. Barça are discussing two forms of this structure.

The first option is a two-year loan with a fee, with Bayern covering his wages. None of the parties seem to favour this, as it is strictly temporary. Barça want to see him leave, while Bayern would want to bring him in if he performs up to expectations.

Here enters the second option, where negotiations are still ongoing. It would be a season-long loan, with Bayern signing him for a fixed fee at the end of the loan. The Bavarians would not have an option to send him back. But that is not where the conflict has arisen.

The primary disagreement is regarding the obligatory fee. Barça are demanding a fee which sees the club make a small loss. On the other hand, Bayern are trying to get the fee as low as possible because of the leverage that they enjoy.

Coutinho himself will have little choice if Barça choose to let him go. The transfer window in England has closed, bringing an end to the Brazil international’s hopes of returning to Liverpool. Now, Bayern is his only chance to resurrect his dying career.
