An already depleted Barcelona attack could be without its star striker for quite a while.

More bad news Barcelona as reports out of the Catalan capital are claiming that Luis Suarez could be looking at knee surgery which would sideline the Uruguayan for a good spell.

Mundo Deportivo are reporting that the club were monitor the status of their only striker but are unaware of the possibility that he might need surgery.

More from Everything Barca

They state that Suarez could be seen holding his right knee time and time again against Espanyol but nothing came about as not only did he finish the game but was one of Barcelona’s better players on the night.

However, the pain came back in the Atletico Madrid loss and made only worse once the team arrived back in Barcelona.

Diario Sport claim that Suarez will meet with doctor Roman Cugat and that surgery is looking like a strong possibility.

One of the reasons why Suarez would opt for surgery now is to be back at near full strength for the Champions League.

His lack of sharpness and scoring drought away in the Champions League has been detrimental to Barcelona the past handful of seasons.

However, his absence will be a huge blow to the team since they do not have a back-up in place.

Ousmane Dembélé is injured, Carles Perez is more of a winger and Ansu Fati, despite his early success, is still only 17.

The most likely of scenarios would be to see either Perez or Fati come in for Suarez with Griezmann occupying the centre-forward position. Another option would be to play Lionel Messi as a false ‘9.’

Despite the criticism levied at the Uruguayan, he’s still the club’s best option up front as evidenced by the fact that they have yet to find an adequate replacement for him.

He had been having a decent season up to this point and was even named La Liga’s Player of the Month for December.

Now the Catalans are going to have to make do without him. Their best hope is that he does come back at full strength and helps the team on all fronts. Given their struggles up to this point, they are going to need him.
