The French defender is set to go on loan for six months with the aim of returning to Barcelona at the end of the loan.

Jean-Clair Todibo is set for a move away from Barcelona with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 beating out AC Milan to acquire his services.

The French defender was spotted in an airport in Dusseldorf and an official announcement is expected to be released soon.

According to Diario Sport, the loan will be for the rest of the season leaving Samuel Umtiti as the back-up behind Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet.

Barça B’s Ronald Araujo would be next in line should any of the other three suffer an injury.

Mundo Deportivo report that the only small detail left is whether Schalke will have an option to buy at the end of the loan.

Todibo would find himself reunited with another Barcelona loanee in Juan Miranda.

Schalke moved ahead of the pack recently with AC Milan losing patience as Todibo was taking his time in making a decision.

Looks like Todibo ultimately chose Schalke. On the surface, it’s a safer move than joining Milan given their struggles in Serie A.

Schalke currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga and well within Champions League places. AC Milan sit in tenth and are in turmoil both on and off the pitch.

Todibo was signed from Toulouse back in 2019 during the winter transfer window. The club’s initial intention was to sign him in the summer for free as his contract was running out.

Being frozen out by Toulouse forced Barcelona to bring him in early and pay a fee so as to not stunt his development by sitting the bench.

Some can argue that he’s done just that since joining as he’s been used sparingly by Ernesto Valverde.

Todibo’s intentions continue to be to succeed with the Catalan giants. But at the same time he knows that he needs to play.

With Valverde likely gone by next summer, if not sooner, and Gerard Pique turning 33, the new manager may have more confidence in Frenchman and may see more playing time with whoever is next in charge.
