Barcelona could make a crucial change to their first-team’s setup soon after deciding to pursue a figure who has done a great deal for the club.

Barcelona fired Ernesto Valverde at the beginning of this calendar year and appointed Quique Setien as his replacement. The former Real Betis man has done a decent job, but the message has been pretty clear in the negative results and it has been that the players have been responsible for the poor results, and not the managerial team.

Somehow following Real Madrid’s latest debacles, Barca have opened up a two point cushion over their arch rivals in La Liga but face a fantastic Napoli side that has found its old self under Gennaro Gattuso in the UEFA Champions League’s round of 16. The Catalans’ first leg in the continental competition is on Tuesday and winning away in Italy has not been an easy thing for the club in recent years.

If the Catalans end up failing in the Champions League this year as well, there will be major questions raised about Quique Setien as well, and with Ronald Koeman being vacant after the Euro 2020, there could be calls for the Netherlands manager’s appointment during the upcoming summer from many.

El Desmarque has reported that Pep Guardiola will reportedly be on Barca’s radar should they manage to retain Quique Setien until 2021. The Manchester City manager’s contract at the Etihad Stadium ends next summer, so having stayed in the Premier League for five years and won every domestic accolade in England, Pep could open the door to his Catalan return.

Manchester City will almost certainly offer their historic manager a new contract, but whether the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss accepts the proposal remains to be seen given the fact that the defending Premier League champions have been banned from the UEFA Champions League for the next two years.
